Detox Tea: Behind the Scenes

Part 3: For My Own Health

If you’ve ever read my posts before, you know that I’m in recovery from an eating disorder.

And if you didn’t know that, now you do.

Being in recovery caused some issues when working for a weight loss company.

The technical term would be “cognitive dissonance”. But all it means is that working there required me to hold different (namely: conflicting) beliefs and thoughts at all times.

I was selling you tea and telling you how amazing it tasted. Talking about the wonders it did for my body and my health.

But in reality, I wasn’t permitted to even try the tea by the treatment team. In fact, when it was sent to me, my therapist (at the time) had me dump out one of the packages with her.

It had never been in my body. I didn’t know if it tasted good. I didn’t know if it made you feel awake or tired or anxious.

When we premiered a new workout program, I wrote it. (As the only ex-athlete on the team, I was considered the “fitness expert”). But what you didn’t know was that I hadn’t been cleared to test it. So, I had no idea of how hard it would be. If it was even do-able. (Shout out to my friends for trying it while I watched!).

So, here I was telling you all about the wonders of weight loss. While sitting in weekly therapy discussing how weight loss had never helped me or my life.

If that’s not cognitive dissonance, then I don’t know what is.

At the end of the day, I quit working there while sitting on the floor of an airport. After refusing to write a blog about how to use detox teas with a popular (and dangerous) dieting method. Because enough was enough, for everyone involved.

Detox companies are out there to sell you your “worth” through weight loss. Diet culture is out there to make you think things like that are okay.

But, the workers, like you, are just people. With our own feelings and struggles.
